The minimum age depends on the category sought (art. 11):
- 16 years of age completed for category "A1" (light motorcycle, light powered tricycle, heavy quadricycle);
- 18 years of age completed for categories "A", "B" and "E(B)";
- 21 years of age completed for categories "C", "D", "E(C)" and "E(D)". This age of 21 is also required to drive a category "B" vehicle used for public passenger transport.
But age alone is not enough. To sit the exam, you must also (art. 11):
- be physically and mentally fit to drive, as certified by a medical certificate;
- for categories "C", "D", "E(C)" and "E(D)", have completed training at an authorised establishment;
- for certain heavy categories, already hold a "B" licence for at least two years (after the end of the probationary period), with a balance of at least 12 points.
A prior medical examination is mandatory before the tests (art. 12), in order to verify that you are not affected by any condition that prohibits driving.
